La organización estadounidense de defensa de los derechos humanos Human Rights Watch (HRW) denunció este martes el asesinato de 17 indígenas por parte de la organización colombiana dedicada al terrorismo y tráfico de drogas Farc-EP.

HRW indicó en un comunicado en Washington que la información del asesinato de 17 miembros de la comunidad Awa en el departamento de Nariño (sur) la obtuvo de "fuentes confiables".

Los asesinatos también fueron denunciados este martes en Bogotá por el gobernador de Nariño, el socialista Antonio Navarro, quien afirmó a la AFP que las FARC habrían matado a los indígenas acusándolos de colaborar con el ejército, citando a un testigo que pudo huir.

Según el funcionario, la matanza habría ocurrido el 4 de febrero cobrándose la vida de entre 17 y 18 aborígenes Awa en un paraje remoto del municipio de Barbacoas.

El director de HRW para las Américas, José Miguel Vivanco, indicó en el comunicado que los asesinatos mostraron "un completo desprecio por la vida de civiles".

"Estos crueles asesinatos violan los más básicos principios de decencia y dignidad humanas (...) No hay excusa posible o justificación para estos espantosos actos".

The U.S. human rights Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Tuesday denounced the murder of 17 Indians by the Colombian organization dedicated to terrorism and drug trafficking FARC-EP.

HRW said in a statement in Washington that the information in the murder of 17 members of the Awa community in the department of Nariño (south) obtained from "reliable sources".

The killings were reported Tuesday in Bogotá by the governor of Nariño, the socialist Antonio Navarro, who told AFP that the FARC allegedly killed by the Indians accused of collaborating with the army, citing a witness who could flee.

According to the official, the slaughter would have occurred on February 4 killing between 17 and 18 Aboriginal Awa in a remote town of Barbacoas.

HRW director for the Americas Jose Miguel Vivanco, said in the statement that the killings were "a complete disregard for civilian lives."

"These cruel killings violate the most basic principles of decency and human dignity (...) There is no possible excuse or justification for these appalling acts."
